I prepare a LOT of first time spray tanners for their appointment. See below for the frequently asked questions we get asked regularly and their answers.
How to Prepare for a Spray Tan / What to Expect in a Spray Tan
These are questions my clients ask me frequently, so don’t be afraid to ask them!
- Will I be orange?
- Will I be sticky?
- Can I shower?
- Does it smell?
Here is what I think.
QQ (quick question) : Will I be orange?
You will NOT be orange. Spray tanning has come a long way since the early days of Schwarzenegger on Muscle Beach. At Bronze Palms, we have a variety of bases (pink, violet, olive, indigo) that look beautiful on the right person and mimic how you would naturally tan in the sun.
If you naturally burn in the sun or are sensitive to the sun, you run the risk of looking too bright in the sun; that is why it is very important to listen to your spray tan artist who provides the recommended rinse time to you so you don’t overdevelop. Leaving spray tan solution on your skin for longer than recommended does not make for a longer lasting tan; it means you run the risk of looking unnatural.
QQ: Will I be sticky?
Spray tan solution is a liquid; you will feel damp.
At Bronze Palms, we apply two light coats of solution on the skin for a full coverage look, then we add drying powder all over your body so you don’t feel tacky.
2 layers on the body. 1 layer on the face. Perfection!
QQ: Do I have to spray my face?
Some women will skip tanning the face for a few reasons:
- if they usually wear a full coverage foundation look
- are getting their makeup done by a professional (like for their wedding)
- have a skincare routine they would prefer to stick to that includes acne products or retinol
QQ: Can I shower?
YES! Depending on the tan type, you can [and should] be rinsing between 4 and 12 hours; your spray tan technician will tell you! At Bronze Palms, all of our solutions are rapid/express solutions so you can shower in 4 hours or less in comparison to the traditional 8-12 hour solutions. I like rapid solutions because they are more convenient for the same longevity.
QQ: Does it smell?
Typically, there is an odor that comes off after a spray tan that smells like sugar. Even the most premium solutions on the market will cause this to happen as your skin is responding to the product. Clients compliment our solutions for being odorless!
BONUS!
Here are a handful (5) of things you need to do to prepare for a spray tan.
- Come showered. Be free of sweat, perfumes, oils, deodorant, lotions, sunscreen and makeup prior to your appointment.
- Shave. Don’t wait until after the appointment to shave. Your tan seeps 1.5 layers below the skin and shaving removes a part of that layer which will reduce the longevity of your tan.
- Exfoliate. Slough-off the dead skin cells on the top layer of your skin so allow your spray tan to set evenly. If you have splotchy tans, this is why; because you’re not exfoliating well.
- Bring a hair tie to keep your hair off your back, neck, and face.
- Wear loose fitting clothing and sandals after your appointment. You’ll want to avoid any friction until your first shower so things like jeans, leggings, sports bras are frowned upon.
